Elon Musk’s ‘Starlink’ internet service, which uses satellites to provide web access for people living in remote locations is starting to slow down. Ookla, a company that monitors internet speeds and network performance, havereported that Starlink speeds across Europe and the US have dropped between 9% and 54% between 2021 and 2022, a huge difference! This is almost certainly due to the massive amount of subscribers joining the service, currently there are around 700,000 subscribers whereas at the beginning of the year there were just 145,000.

Starlink is still supporting a download speed of 60Mbps in the US, which is still very good for
people that don’t have many options for internet connectivity. The average speed in Europe
for Starlink this year has been 100Mbps which has outperformed traditional internet access in
16 different countries.

Things are going well for Starlink even with this slow down as they are still providing the
fastest satellite internet speeds in several areas. In the future Starlink are looking at
including 5G phone service which will involve using larger satellites that unfortunately they
do not currently have the authorization to launch.

Will Starlink be able to keep up with the growing demand for the service it provides? We will
have to wait and see.
